Founder Director’s Vision

A Life Inspired by Service

Bro. Mathew Pannathanath, the visionary founder of Montfort College, began his journey with the Montfort Brothers at the age of 14. Deeply inspired by the life and mission of St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, who dedicated himself to the education and upliftment of the marginalized, Bro. Mathew committed his life to the service of the underprivileged through education.

Academic Pursuits in Psychology

Answering this calling, he pursued a Master’s degree and later a PhD in Counselling Psychology from De La Salle University, Manila.

Leadership in Technical Education

In the 1970s and 1980s, he led several Montfort Technical Institutes across India and Fiji, offering vocational training in engineering and technical trades. It was during his time in Fiji that he experienced a profound inner calling — one that would redirect his path toward mental health and human development.

Recognizing a Nation's Emotional Needs

Upon returning to India, Bro. Mathew recognized the growing psychological and emotional challenges facing society

At the time, mental health services were primarily medicalized, and counselling remained largely unrecognized. People frequently asked:

“Where can we find such a program in India?”
This question revealed a critical gap in psychological support systems.

The Birth of Montfort College

Determined to address this need, Bro. Mathew began conducting counselling training programs, which sparked growing interest.
His vision took shape in 1995 with the launch of a Post Graduate Diploma in Holistic Psychological Counselling.

After three years of navigating regulatory and academic challenges, Montfort College was formally established in 1998, affiliated with Bangalore University. It became the first institution in India to introduce an MSc in Holistic Psychological Counselling, setting a new benchmark in mental health education.

Legacy of Holistic Education

This pioneering step laid the foundation for a comprehensive, person-centered approach to psychological training in India. Today, Montfort College is a premier institution, shaping competent professionals equipped to address the emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of modern society.

A Symbol of Wholeness

The college emblem bears the Sanskrit word:

“Sampurna”meaning becoming whole

It symbolizes the college’s commitment to holistic development.

An Everlasting Vision

Bro. Mathew’s vision transcends borders and disciplines. He continues to inspire a new generation of mental health professionals dedicated to healing, transformation, and the pursuit of human dignity.
